GET Changed, a theatre project for adults with learning disabilities in West and Mid Devon, is celebrating 15 years of performing arts in December with a forthcoming project 'Respect'.
The Get Changed Theatre Company provides opportunities for disadvantaged people to learn skills for life, and is represented by 20 adults who have a desire to be included and to find their place in the wider community through the learning medium of drama and performing arts.
The group is currently working on a project exploring friendship and feelings. This project, to be performed at the Octagon Theatre in Okehampton in February, will be used as a springboard to embark upon an extensive project that will explore human rights and equality, specifically focusing on the word 'respect', beginning in spring 2011 and ending in 2013.
The Respect project, using key principles, will help adults with learning disabilities develop a skill and knowledge base, and expand their competence to speak up for themselves confidently, understanding their rights and responsibilities.
The project will not only benefit the members, but will play a key part in educating public audiences, challenging attitudes and tackling prejudiced and discriminatory behaviour towards disabled people.
During the first year Get Changed, through a series of interactive workshops, will shape the content and plot of a story, telling others what it is like to have choice and control and to be treated fairly and with respect — concluding in a major theatre production in spring 2012.
In the second year, the group plans to create and produce a community film drawing upon the experiences and previous work of members. Get Changed plans to tour the film to schools, colleges and social and healthcare professionals throughout Devon.
Get Changed is a registered charity run by a team of voluntary trustees. The group is always seeking interested people to join the trustees and welcomes people who have previous organisational experience working with voluntary community groups. Also seeking funding support, the group is keen to hear from any person or organisation interested in sponsoring the project.
