A NEW street lighting policy which could see some street lights turned off after midnight has been favoured by members of Calstock Parish Council. Communities are being asked to give their views on three options in a street lighting review by Cornwall County Council. The review has resulted from volatile increases in the cost of electrical energy since 2004 and a greater awareness of carbon emissions, says the council. Minimising the impact of lighting systems will have to be balanced with community safety needs. Option one will continue with the current policy of dusk to dawn street lighting; option two is a part- night operation whereby lights will be switched off from 12.30am to 5.30am, and option three is an integrated operation including dimming, part-night and 'dusk to dawn.' Calstock parish councillors have voted in favour of the integrated option which would be based on the extent of traffic and pedestrian usage. The consultation period ends at the end of this month and responses can be made in writing to: Highway Electrical Group, Western Group Centre, Radnor Road, Scorrier, Redruth, TR16 5EH. Executive council member Cllr Matt McTaggart said: 'While it is relatively simple to demonstrate savings on both carbon emissions and operation energy costs, consideration must also be given to public safety and security during the hours of darkness. We need to hear from the community before we determine how the scheme will proceed.'
