Bill Treeby Cup Chagford Reserves 1 Malborough United 2 TOP of the table Malborough counted themselves lucky to progress, against a much spirited side in this quarter-final. Belying their lowly league placing, Chagford fought tooth and nail and deserved better. Malborough may have edged the game in footballing terms but Chagford came at them time after time and, but for better finishing might have turned things around. As it was, they changed ends two goals down through two unfortunate strokes of luck. Firstly, a misdirected back-pass allowed a Malborough striker through to slot the ball home and then a direct free-kick was narrowly deflected past Dowell. The latter being on the stroke of half-time, allowing Chagford the break to regroup. Having to take the game to the visitors, Chagford did just that and Malborough?s ?keeper found himself more employed. Potter narrowly lost out on two one-on-ones and Mortimore and Vincent both sent shots over the bar. Adam Stocks forced the ball over the line ? a reward for the effort he put in all afternoon. Solid tackling by the home side kept the visitors out, with Dowell looking a lot more reassured. It would be unfair to opt for one home player for man-of-the match as, at critical times, all stood tall. The visitors were disappointed at their own display but were quick to praise their hosts in a sporting, well reffed match. l This week, the reserves travel to rivals Newton 66 Reserves in the Fred Hewings Cup.
