WEST Devon residents who love a challenge are being urged to enter this year?s Oke Croak run, which starts in Okehampton on Sunday June 1.

Last year it was feared the run, set amongst some of the most spectacular scenery on Dartmoor, may fold, when long-serving organiser Peter Shalders stood down after many years dedication to the organisation of the race.

But Dartmoor Rescue Group has stepped in and agreed to support the run, dubbed one of the most scenic in Devon.

Paul Bartlett, DRG spokesman, said the group is hoping for a strong field of competitors for the run.

Paul said: ?We would like to see more local people taking part this year. You don?t have to be a fast runner to enter; just getting around the course is an achievement to be proud of!?

The Oke Croak is a challenging run of around ten miles, starting and ending at Okehampton.

The course follows footpaths onto the moor from Simmons Park. Runners can then choose their own route to Oke Tor and Yes Tor, the second highest point in Devon, before heading back downhill to Okehampton.

The terrain can be rough and boggy in places and will require navigational skills, particularly if the weather is bad.

Changing facilities, toilets and a bar will be available in Simmons Park, courtesy of the football club.

Paul said there will be a memento for all finishers of the race, with prizes for the first male and female, the first veteran (over 50) male and female and the first dog home! Minimum age 18.

The run is being supported by Dartmoor Rescue Group, who will providing checkpoints, marshalling and first aid.

Entrance is £5 in advance, £7 on the day. All surplus proceeds from the day will be donated to the Rescue Group. For more details or entry forms, call Paul on 01647 281692 or send an SAE to Churchgate Cottage, Drewsteignton, Devon EX6 6QX.
