THE management committee of Tavistock Subscription Library met recently to appoint a successor to their friend and dedicated honorary secretary and treasurer John Gale, who died suddenly on April 15. John was a retired schoolmaster and devoted much of his time and skills to youth and community organisations, both locally and in his native Bexleyheath in Kent. He put the same energy into the Subscription Library and initiated a newsletter and computer technology. He did much to encourage the library's association with other literary and welfare organisations. The committee felt the loss of John's friendship and commitment to their historic organisation keenly and has decided to divide his responsibilities among other members. Letters inviting nominations and volunteers will be sent out soon.
