RELATIVES of the World War One fallen named on the Tavistock War Memorial are being invited to attend a special remembrance service by Tavistock College in November. The college is looking to find any family members of people named on the memorial, to find out more about the person and to get as many relatives as possible to its Remembrance service at St Eustachius' Church on November 11, while the WW1 fallen are read out. A spokesperson for the college said: 'We want to try to get anyone who was related to anyone who died in World War One coming along to our service. 'There are a lot of surnames on the list which are still around, you can tell from the students' surnames in the college.' Teacher Helen Harris, who is organising the service, said: 'Every year the names on the college roll of honour are read out, and as this year it is the centenary of the beginning of World War One, we would like to invite their relatives and any relatives from the town memorial roll, to come along to the service. This year it will be on the actual day, November 11, and we would like any relatives interested to share in this solemn service.' The college already has information about some of the people named on the memorial, including Private William Harold Friend of the 7th Battalion, the Somerset Light Infantry, who was the son of William and Rhoda Friend, born in Whitchurch in 1884 and died in April 1918 aged 24; Sub Lt William Henry Felix Gould of the Royal Navy, son of Charles and Ada Gould of Endsleigh Terrace, Tavistock, born in Whitchurch in 1897 and died in December 1917 aged 20 when his ship was torpedoed by UB64; Lance Corporal Francis George Jago of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment, son of Ellen and the late John Kerswill of Westbridge Cottages, born in 1887 and died in 1918 aged 30 and Bombardier Sylvester James Pethick of B Battery, 236th brigade, the Royal Field Artillery, son of James and Mary Pethick of Gunnislake, born in Tavistock Hamlets in 1893 and died in May 1918, aged 25 and buried in St Paul's Churchyard, Gulworthy. The school will have around 200 year 9 students and around 150 year 13 students attending the service and hopes to be able to get around 100 relatives attend. Anyone in the area who has information on any of the fallen from WW1, whether it is of friends or family, is asked to contact Helen Harris at the college via email on [email protected]">[email protected].
