A RECENT correspondent claimed that 'UKIP stands for good old British traditional Christian values'. Readers will have their own views on what traditional British values are and how far they are consistent with Christian teaching. It is, however, an uncontestable fact that Christianity from the start broke down divisions between people based on nationality, ethnicity and status. It originated in the Middle East, and was established in Europe long before it reached these shores.   Today the largest group of Christians by nationality is said to be Chinese. Many churches in Britain are benefiting from committed Christians from immigrant families bringing renewed energy. Welcoming the stranger is a thread that runs through the Bible from the law of Moses to the parable of the Good Samaritan and St Paul's rescue from shipwrecks. The best of 'British values' may have their roots in Christian faith, but 'Christian values' are upheld — sometimes at great cost — by millions of believers who have no connection to Britain. I urge my fellow Christians to reject any politician who attempts to stir up fear and rejection of strangers in the name of our faith. Christine Harbottle Deer Park Lane Tavistock
