THE jubilee was celebrated in style at Yelverton Tennis club when the club held a extended Sunday club session.

Flags, bunting streamers and balloons decked the courts and clubhouse, all members wore red, white and blue and some managed to play tennis in their crowns!

Lunch was a communal affair with everyone providing food and the club providing red, white and blue wine.

The tennis started as a mini tournament, but as more people arrived this became difficult to continue, and the afternoon was spent playing very social tennis!

Thanks were expressed to Mary Downey and Angie Lynch for organising such a successful day and to John Marshall for manning the barbecue.

Team news — At the halfway stage of the Plymouth and District Summer League the Yelverton teams have completed all but two of their matches — postponed because of bad weather.

The ladies' A team in division 1 have not lost a match. Using a combination from Helen Smith, Tizzy Shobrook, Marjorie Comeau, Denise Nixon and Karen Gasche they won 5-3 against Ivybridge B and 7-3 against Mannamead B. A 5-5 draw against top of the league Ivybridge A, a 4-4 draw against both Mannamead A and St Budeaux A have seen a good start to the season.

The ladies B team in division 3 have won two and lost two matches in the first half of the season. Using combinations from Karen Gasche, Shirley Every, Ann Short, Wendy Sharland, Fiona Spreadbury and Julia Whetton they won 5-4 against Ivybridge D and 7-2 against Saltash, where Ann and Wendy were 5-2 down in the second set against the first couple but managed to hang on and win the set on a tie-break. The B team lost 4-6 to Tavistock B and 1-8 to St Budeaux B. The match against St Mellion s been re-arranged.

The ladies' C team in division 4 have also won two and lost two matches. As availability has been a problem in the C team, the following ladies have all played their part: Fiona Spreadbury, Julia Whetton, Jenny Kay, Lyn Jones, Joy Tynan, Angie Lynch, Di Mayne and Mags Berry. The matches against the Devonshire and Mannamead C both resulted in a 7-2 win for Yelverton, the new pairing of Angie and Di did not lost a set.

The other matches resulted in a 2-6 defeat against St Budeaux C and an 0-8 defeat against St Budeaux D. The match against Liskeard has been re-arranged.

The men's A team, promoted to division 1 for the first time, have not been able to keep a settled team because of injury and unavailability of key players. Phil Gasche, Jamie Shobrook, John Marshall, Terry Leonard, Roger Froud, Peter Smith and Simon Murray have all played their part in the matches, which resulted in a win against Plymstock A 5-4, a draw against Ivybridge B 4-4, and losses against Mannamead A 0-8, Ivybridge A 0-8 and Tavistock A 0-8.

The men's B team, playing in division 5, have again not been able to use the same four players and Simon Murray, Joe Roe, Charles Hattersley, John Marshall, Terry Leonard and Peter Smith have all played for the team. Although they have had close results they were not able to win a match.

The results were a 4-5 loss against Russell Avenue, a 4-6 loss against Ivybridge D, a 5-6 loss against St Budeaux D, 2-8 loss against Mannamead E and 3-7 loss against St Mellion B.

The men's C team in division 6 have also struggled to find winning form and a settled team. Peter Smith, John Marshall, Roger Short, Denis Jones, Tim Shobrook, Jonathan Frappell and Ray and Chris Spreadbury have all played. The results were as follows: against Liskeard lost 3-7; against Tavistock D lost 3-6; against Looe lost 4-6 and against Devonshire lost 0-8.

Yelverton had a walk-over in the first round of the P and D Knock-Out Cup as Liskeard could not field a team. In the second round Yelverton were drawn at home against Ivybridge. Phil and Karen Gasche, Helen Smith and Terry Leonard, Simon Murray and Tizzy Shobrook and Charles Hattersley and Fiona Spreadbury played for Yelverton on a damp and dismal evening, the final score was 3-14 to Ivybridge.
