ELEVEN volunteers from the Okehampton area will be honoured by the British Red Cross at a ceremony to be held in the town next week. Dot Matthews, who chairs the Devon Red Cross Volunteer Council, will present the awards on Wednesday, November 22. Long serving fundraising volunteers who have collected thousands of pounds to support the charity's local work and projects across the world will be awarded certificates of appreciation, as will Jackie Adcock who has run the Red Cross medical equipment loan service for many years. Each May, local volunteers get involved in collecting for Red Cross Week, playing a vital role in enabling the charity to continue its work. Mrs Matthews is looking forward to meeting Okehampton volunteers. She said: 'They do sterling service and are greatly appreciated as charity collectors and in helping people with mobility problems through the loan of wheelchairs, bathing aids and other equipment. 'People often think of us because of our international work, but our services in the UK include a skin camouflage service for those with disfiguring skin conditions, humanitarian education, a range of first aid training and a support service for victims of fire.'
