A CERTIFICATE proclaiming Tavistock a Freetrade town was last week officially presented to the town council, in recognition of its efforts to promote the Fairtrade movement. Tavistock is one of the first towns in Devon to achieve the status ? Geri Leithwaite of Westden?s Communities in Action project presented the council with the certificate and copies of the new Fairtrade directory. The directory is a guide to all the ethically produced goods available in Tavistock and those organisations who are signed up to the movements. Ms Laithwaite said: ?We are here to thank the council for passing the resolution you would support and promote the Fairtrade initiative. ?The status is basically for one year ? the idea is that each year, we will increase the number of outlets you can get Fairtrade goods and increase the number of businesses that are supplying their staff and customers with them.? Ms Laithwaite said the Tavistock Fairtrade directory would be a three-monthly edition, with more businesses and organisations being added to the list every quarter. Alex Wood, chairman of governors at Tavistock College, said the Fairtrade initiative was one that had very strong backing at the school. Mr Wood said: ?It?s not just us aged people, there is a web of young people who have great ethical feelings about this ? it?s a strong movement.? Mr Wood said the youngsters who were backing Fairtrade so enthusiastically at the college were hoping to spread the word to primary schools in the area in the coming months. Town mayor Cllr Caroline Keane thanked Ms Laithwaite for the framed certificates and the Tavistock Fairtrade Initiative for their hard work and said the council was pleased to support such a worthwhile cause.
