A STUDENT from Okehampton is celebrating after picking up an award for her performance during a work experience placement.
Rebecca Kennedy, who studies animal management at Duchy College in Stoke Climsland, was awarded the Animal Management Work Experience Student of the Year award.
This award recognises her achievement, determination and dedication towards the work experience programme.
Rebecca completed her work experience at Lindfield Day Opportunities, a working smallholding that allows young adults who have learning, physical or mental disabilities to have first-hand contact with livestock.
Donna Smith, work experience co-ordinator at Duchy College, explained the importance of work experience placements: 'Work experience is a great opportunity for students to gain first-hand knowledge in a real working situation.
'Our industry experience module improves the students' self-confidence and self-discipline and helps them understand the skills that are required to work in the animal care industry, both with people and animals.
'We hope that the placements will also assist the students to make informed career choices.'
Head of Duchy College Andrew Counsell said: 'Work experience is an integral part of the students' learning and they gain valuable employability skills. Well done to Rebecca for all her hard work.'
Rebecca has now completed her Animal Management Level 2 Diploma, and will be returning to campus in September to begin her level 3 qualification.
