PUPILS and parents of a school in Walkhampton will be boosting their culinary knowledge in a new national initiative, Let's Get Cooking.
Lady Modiford's Primary School has recently gained £2,500 worth of funding to join the national network of cooking clubs for parents and children, with the aim of teaching young people and their families new cooking skills.
The youngsters and parents will do lots of cooking and prepare plenty of tasty dishes which they can take home and will have learned the skills needed to recreate the dish themselves.
Club co-ordinator Anne Hext-Williams said: 'We managed to get the grant from Lottery-funded Let's Get Cooking for £2,500 over three years.
'We will be getting the first part of the grant — £1,000 — in January and will spend £500 on equipment and the other £500 buying food. The funding means that the club is free for children, parents and carers and we're hoping there will be a lot of interest.
'I've run a cookery club before but we had to buy all the ingredients ourselves so the children had to pay a small charge.
There was a lot of interest then. Now, because it's free for all, everyone can get involved. I'm really excited and I know the kids are too.'
In preparation for the start of the club next term, four pupils from Lady Modiford's and two members of staff will be attending a regional Let's Get Cooking start-up day in December.
During this event, children from schools across the South West will be learning new cooking skills, tasting new foods and joining in with food activities and games.
