CHILDREN in Tavistock can take advantage of a special reading challenge during the summer holidays, aimed at maintaining their reading skills.
Devon County Council children?s librarian Paula Mardo said the Reading Rollercoaster scheme had a ?simple but highly effective format? and would encourage children to keep up their reading skills during the six weeks away from school.
Children who take part will receive a special folder in which they can record their favourite books over the summer.
Each time they visit the library they will receive a set of stickers. Children who complete the challenge and collect all six sets of stickers will also receive a special certificate and a medal celebrating their achievement.
Paula said: ?We know that books and computers can work together to inspire children to read.
?For the second year running, the reading challenge has a fun, interactive website to visit, featuring famous children?s authors and illustrators in their natural habitats.?
The Rollercoaster scheme will be launched in Tavistock Library between 10am and 11.30am on Monday July 26.
There are also a variety of fun activities for children to get involved in at the library this summer.
Under fives are catered for on Tuesdays, between 10am and 11am. On July 27, there will be a mask-making session; on August 3 it?s Clowning Around; on August 10 there will be Hoopla; and on August 18 it?s Roll up, Roll up.
Over fives sessions will be held on Fridays, between 10am and 11am. On July 30 there is a Ghost Train session; on August 6 it?s Carousel; on August 13 there is Ride the Rollercoaster ? the final craft session will be on August 20.
And to round off the summer holiday activity programme, there will be a free magic show with Chloe the Clown on August 27, between 10am and 11am.
