MYSTERY remains over the identity of a strange orange object seen moving slowly in the sky at Whitchurch Down two weeks ago.
A family from Whitchurch saw a glowing object near The Pimple during the evening of Thursday, February 26 and appealed to local residents to help identify it.
All three passengers in the car said they saw it at 8.30pm at around 50ft to 100ft high in the sky.
Since the appeal went into the Times last Thursday a few people have been in contact with the paper.
Mr Hicks said while he was at his father's house in Highfield, Tavistock, he also saw the object.
He said: 'I had just sat down at 8.30pm to watch a DVD with my dad on that same Thursday evening, when I noticed a very bright orange light moving over The Pimple.
'It then vanished to reappear again in a slightly different location. It moved very slowly and it was certainly no army flare.'
Mr Wassell from Tavistock said he also saw the bright light: 'I was driving up Green Lane and saw this object in front of me over the moor. I pulled over as I was entering Tavy Road and watched it. It seemed to be going towards Cox Tor.
'My first impression was that it was a pyrotechnic flare, but it would have been too far off the moor for military training. My next thought, it was an aircraft/helicopter on fire. It then seemed to disappear into low cloud. When I got home I saw it again. By the time I found my binoculars, it had gone.'
A woman who lives in Whitchurch Road said she also saw the object but ten days before and for a few days in a row, while another woman claimed the light in the sky was none other than a paper lantern.
Anyone who can shed some light on this sighting is asked to contact the Times on 01822 613666.
