THESPIANS of Throwleigh have prepared a special production ‘The Miss Varwell’s Throwleigh’ which re-tells the stories told in a famous book about the village published in 1938.

The production is based on a book called Throwleigh: The Story of a Dartmoor Village written by Emmie Varwell.

Emmie and her sister were residents of Throwleigh from 1909 until their deaths in the years after World War Two. In 1938 Emmie published a little book in which she described the village as she knew it with additional stories told to her by older residents.

The production brings back the two sisters to give, what are in essence, selected readings from the book supported by a range of projected early photographs from the Throwleigh Archive.

Additionally there will be music from a choir and a six-piece band using songs and tunes that are either mentioned in the book, have been specially written using Emmie’s words, or are derived from English folk and ecclesiastical traditions.

A spokesperson for the production said: ‘All in all it promises to be an entertaining and possibly quite emotional event that will be performed on March 23, 24 and 25 in Throwleigh Village Hall.’
