GARDENERS have the chance to get their hands on some rare and unusual specimens on July 3, when what is being billed as ?the biggest plant market in Devon? takes place in Tavistock?s pannier market. Thirty specialist nurserymen from all over the Westcountry will have stalls set up throughout the day to sell what organisers are describing as ?the most desirable, gardenworthy, rare and beautiful summer flowering plants.? Expert growers will be on hand to give advice about cultivation and the National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens says those who take home a rare plant on the day could be helping to save it from extinction. A spokesperson said: ?So many plants are lost to cultivation by the vagaries of fashion or internationally through climate change and deforestation that the threat of extinction is not an idle one. You can help us create a living archive by buying and growing an unusual or rare plant.? The plant market will be open from 10am to 3pm. Refreshments will be available ? entrance is £1 for non-NCCPG members.
