AN appeal was this week issued by two West Devon women who are arranging a reunion of former pupils of a tiny village school, shut down during world war two.
Georgina Elston, nee Molland, and Dee Gant are trying to contact people who attended Broadwoodkelly Village School before it was closed in the winter of 1944/5.
Dee said: ?We have the attendance for Winkleigh School, which is where all the children went after the school closed, and apparently they all moved over in February 1945.
?We thought it was a bit odd they didn?t start at the beginning of term, but apparently January 1945 was very snowy and they couldn?t get to school!?
Dee said the school would have been very small, with probably only a maximum of about 20 pupils.
?It?s only one room and it was divided with a curtain ? it?s now our village hall.?
Dee said the reason they are trying to get people together is because they are endeavouring to produce a booklet about the village of Broadwoodkelly.
?We have started a little local history club. We are a very tiny village and we want to produce this booklet about the school and the church. We hope by contacting people to get them together we will get some interesting stories.?
She said she has already been in contact with one former pupil of the school who is more than 100 years old and who has already provided her with a wealth of interesting stories.
The Broadwoodkelly Village School reunion will be held in Broadwoodkelly Village Hall on Thursday January 9 at 2.30pm.
Anyone who can come or has information on the school should call Dee Gant on 01837 83625 or Georgina Elston on 01837 83506.
