A TEACHER who lives in Tavistock will be running in the London Marathon on April 14, to raise money for Oxfam.

Phil Stevens has lived in Tavistock since 1981 and teaches at Launceston College, and wants to raise funds for Oxfam to help fight some of the worst effects of poverty in developing countries.

Phil has been training around the town and on the moor since January. He is running around forty miles in total a week, with his longest single run so far an exhausting 22 mile trek. Phil had been due to run the marathon last year, but had to pull out through injury.

Phil says his sponsorship campaign so far is going well in both Tavistock and Launceston. Anyone who would like to support Phil should drop into the Oxfam shop in Tavistock, and make a pledge. As an incentive there is a £20 prize to the person who guesses closest to Phil's finishing position among the 40,000 competitors. If all goes well, he hopes to finish in just over four hours.
