HEAVY rain over the past few weeks has seriously affected the Okehampton and District Tennis Club?s league and social programme with matches and club times having to be cancelled. Of the matches played the ladies second team completed home and away fixtures against Lympstone. Although both matches were lost the club welcomed back Billie and Emily Sanderson for their first games of the season with both giving great support to their partners Sarah Carter and Penny Holman. The men?s second team lost to the promotion favourites Kingsteignton. John Jarvis and Alan Holman again providing the backbone of the team with juniors Thomas Hall and Mitch Barltrop playing together as a partnership for the first time. This weekend the club looks forward to an improvement in the weather with a full programme of tennis to support the Okehampton Sports and Fitness Festival. On Saturday activities begin at 10am with two one hour sessions for children up to 11 years old. The club will be extending its regular junior playing times to welcome all newcomers to try tennis and improve their ball skills. Two one hour sessions will be held ? from 10am to 11am for children up to eight years old and from 11pm to noon for children from eight to 11 years old. In the afternoon the club will host an open mixed doubles tournament for the Town Cup. The competition is open to all comers from the age of 16 upwards. Individuals are welcome with partnerships being decided on the day.
