DESPITE the wet and stormy weather Yelverton Tennis Club managed to find a break from the rain to hold the finals of the autumn doubles tournament.

In the ladies? doubles, junior members Emily Murray and Helena Frappell, playing in their first senior final, were up against formidable opposition in Julia Whetton and Fiona Spreadbury.

Emily and Helena played well and were not disgraced by losing 6-3, 6-1. With more senior match experience they will be a force to be reckoned with in the future.

In the men?s doubles, Peter Smith and Terry Leonard defeated John Marshall and Steve

Pearson ? playing for the unavailable Phil Gashe ? 6-4, 6-4.

The mixed doubles was unable to be completed because of unavailability and this resulted in a walk-over for Julia Whetton and Steve Pearson.

The plate competition saw Wendy Sharland and Dennis Jones defeat John Marshall and Mary Downey 6-4 7-5 in a closely contested match with excellent tennis.

The winners in the ladies plate competition were Jenny Kay and Di Mayne who defeated Janet Strelling and Kate Wright 6-4 6-2.

The men?s doubles plate between Ray Spreadbury and Charles Hattersley and son Chris Spreadbury and Ed Coombes has yet to take place.

Members are reminded that the annual

meeting takes place on November 15 at the war memorial hall in Yelverton at 8pm. Any prospective new members are invited to attend.
