HEAVY rain resulted in Gulworthy Church?s drive-in Songs of Praise on the last Sunday in July becoming a walk-in event, but successful despite this. Only four-wheel-drive vehicles could negotiate the field, but approximately 180 people attended from many villages around Tavistock and enjoyed a sunny, though breezy, evening with views of the moors as a backdrop. Each benefice in the deanery had chosen a favourite hymn, which was accompanied by the Stannary Brass Band. The rural dean, Rev Geoff Lloyd, gave a talk about slave trade reformer William Wilberforce. After the service everyone socialised around the barbecue, with beefburgers made from beef from local Colcharton Farm. The evening brought to a close St Paul?s Church?s gift day, which raised £6,500. Over the weekend there was also an art and craft display by Gulworthy Primary School pupils in the church. Earlier in the month, a garden party at Morwell House, hosted by Peter and Jemima Hoskins, had had to be held under cover due to the weather, but approximately £3,000 was still raised towards the new church heating system.
