A FORMER London and South West Railway carriage which has been used as a home by the present occupant for the past 65 years is up for auction.

The carriage — known as Raddons Bungalow, near St Giles on the Heath, Launceston — has been extended over the years and stands in two acres of ground in a rural location.

It was placed on the site in 1921, the current owner and her late husband taking up residence in 1937.

The husband had shaken hands on the deal — which cost him only £65 — at a bridge in Launceston, approximately three miles away.

The days of the carriage as a home may be numbered, however, as planning permission for the erection of a replacement dwelling and integral garage has been granted.

The existing accommodation comprises three small bedrooms, sitting room, kitchen/breakfast room, rear lobby and bathroom/WC.

The gardens are laid to lawn and there are numerous flower beds.

Although the property has mains electricity, the water supply and drainage are private.

There are no close neighbouring dwellings.

The auction will be held at The White Hart Hotel, Launceston on Friday, Apri 12 at 3pm, unless previously sold by Private Treaty.

The price guide is £80,000.
