I REFER to 'Unanswered questions on rail-homes proposal' (Times, Letters, March 7) from Mrs Elizabeth Challis.

A good letter! Only thing wrong is that it was West Devon Borough, not the county who took the decision to develop Tavistock in their Local Development Framework in 2008-09.

The Labour Government forced local councils to massively increase additional housing. I voted against the Core Strategy, not because I was against some development for local people in Tavistock, but the scale was inappropriate for the topography of Tavistock where, as I have said so many times, we are situated in a valley on a crossroad!

There were rural areas with local employment, vulnerability relating to post offices, pubs and schools that wanted to have some development.

I suggested new development be spread around the borough. I was told by experienced and honoured councillors that I didn't realise the importance of focusing the development in our market towns and to sit down!

There are too many unanswered questions and I am not satisfied with the responses I have been given in some quarters.

I sympathise with Mrs Challis' comments and am trying to get to the bones of these issues too.

The decision has been made and we must now work on making this development a balanced and good design for future generations.
