SOME of the Plymouth Raiders players will be attending the CHICKS summer fair and open day this weekend, along with their mascot, Foxy. The event will be at Moorland Retreat, Brentor on Saturday from 11am and everyone is welcome. The Brentor Suite, the centre's new conference room, will be officially opened by Garry Eccles, chief executive of Wrigleys, one of CHICKS' corporate sponsors, during the open day. There will be live music from Plymouth saxophonist Martin Dale during the day. For the children there will be pony rides, a circus skills workshop, paintball, face painting and a falconry display. A barbecue and refreshments will be available plus the usual craft stalls to meander around. As well as the Moorland Retreat at Brentor, CHICKS also run a coastal retreat near Par. The children who stay at the centres come from a variety of backgrounds. Many have been abused, live in poverty or have been neglected. Others live in care or are themselves 'child carers', caring for disabled or terminally ill relatives. CHICKS Chief Executive, Roy Endacott, said: 'Many of the children experience countryside and the sea for the first time on a visit. 'Staff and volunteers who look after the children are fun, enthusiastic and energetic and aim to feed positive messages to the children during their stay.' CHICKS relies entirely on donations and offers breaks to 800 children a year and aims to increase this to 1,000 children by 2010.
