WEST Devon-based international charity RAPID-UK announced last week it had been forced to cancel its fundraising raft race which was due to take place on Sunday, July 3. The cancellation was forced due to the difficulties of insuring the event, which was to have taken place along the River Tamar. The organisers apologise to all those planning to enter, and hope the problems can be resolved for next year. RAPID-UK ? Rescue And Preparedness In Disasters ? operates both abroad and in the UK in the search and rescue of casualties following major disasters. RAPID-UK is also involved in the training and development of local disaster management teams in areas of the world vulnerable to large-scale natural disasters. These teams are currently being set up in Peru, Columbia, Pakistan and India. Volunteer teams from RAPID-UK have to date attended earthquakes, floods and hurricanes in more than 24 countries around the world. RAPID-UK is supported 100% by donations from the public and all its members are volunteers.
