RECORD-breaking Tavistock Marathon runner Adam Holland is racing a horse over a 10-mile course of Yelverton's moorland, bridleways and lanes tomorrow (Friday) to raise money for a charity that turns around the lives of vulnerable young people.
Adam, nicknamed 'Tango', hopes to prove that two legs can beat four as he takes on 'Tango' the five-year-old, 14.2 hands high Appaloosa X Welsh horse, while raising money for national charity Brathay.
Owner of the horse Kate Melville, whom she rescued along with another horse four years ago, will ride her for the race. Tango, who had been badly treated, was very underweight, nervous of humans and wild and unmanageable.
Kate said: 'It took a long time to gain the trust of both horses and to get them back into condition. I was under the impression that Tango was a little Dartmoor Hill Pony, but she kept growing. When she was four years old I decided to start training her and used calm, sympathetic methods similar to those of Monty Roberts and Intelligent Horsemanship.
'This proved to be the best way to gain her trust and she took to riding very quickly. Since then she has been my most faithful riding horse.'
Kate said she planned the race route around one of her favourite rides as it has a mixture of lanes and moorland and great views. She said she tried to make it as fair as possible as obviously Tango will be able to gallop on the flatter moors and bridle paths.
'However, we will have to stop for traffic and walk down hills and lanes,' said Kate. 'I think it will be a close call as to who wins.'
Supporting Adam and his fundraising for Brathay is the Newton Abbot-based Orlando Rogers Foundation. Established in honour and memory of the life of Orlando Rogers, who died at 26 years old in 2011, the foundation helps extraordinary people to achieve extraordinary things.
Monies raised by Adam will be supplemented by a grant from the Orlando Rogers Foundation.
Adam said: 'Orlando Rogers did some amazing things in his short life and he lives on through the foundation. I hope people will support us for the race. The money we can raise together will help others achieve something remarkable too.'
Adam is the youngest person to have run 100 marathons and also holds the world record for being the youngest and fastest person to run ten marathons in ten days.
He now wants to beat his own record for running ten marathons later this year. Between Friday, May 9 and Sunday, May 18 he will again run ten marathons in ten days, around England's largest lake — Windemere. If he can run each marathon in under three hours he will set a new record.
Tomorrow's Tango race will start at 1pm at Yelverton Rock, Buckland Monachorum.
