MORE than £300 was raised at the first ever horse-racing night in aid of Sticklepath Fireshow, held in the King?s Arms at South Zeal recently.
Fireshow organisers were delighted with the turnout, with the prize for the best gambler going to Hannah Madders, of Sticklepath, who won a DVD player.
Ian Crawford, chairman of the fireshow, said he hoped the race night would now become an annual event
He said: ?The committee would like to thank everyone who came along and made the night so much fun and helped us to raise some much-needed funds.
?We would also like to say a big thank you to the race sponsors, horse owners and people who donated the prizes for their support.?
Race results were: Okehampton Glass gold cup, Roger the Dodger, owned by Jane Simpson; SWAC Stakes, Mine?s a Bid, Rob Pedrick; the Robert Littlejohns Fireshow Stakes, Red Flag, Sue Burden; SAM Builders race, Job?s a Good ?Un, Vikki Henry, Taw River Inn Ladies Race, Cocktail Cherry, Geraldine; The Drainology Stakes, The Reamer, Anna Chalcroft.
Dave Goodwin, fireshow spokesman, said: ?This was the first of several fundraising nights that we hope will offer something for everyone to enjoy, whilst supporting the fireshow at the same time.?
Dave said the next item on the fundraising programme was a ?Booze and Brains Quiz Night? at Sticklepath Village Hall on Saturday September 11. Teams of four are invited, at £5 per person, to include a drink and ploughman?s supper.
The event starts at 7.30pm and will include a licensed bar and prize for the winning team.
On October 9 there will be a 60s/70s disco, again in the village hall.
Dave said entries were still being accepted for the summer quiz. Sheets cost £1 each with a £20 prize for the most correct entries and were available from shops and pubs in the area.
Anyone who wants to enter a team should call Dave on 01837 840334.
