MORWELLHAM Quay, the historic Victorian port and copper mine, near Tavistock, has a new director.

Peter Kenwright has been appointed to the post, succeeding Gary Emerson, who retired on health grounds.

Mr Kenwright, 55, was formerly an independent marketing and management specialist working in the hospitality and business tourism sectors.

He is credited with initiating Britain's first festival of comedy as conference officer at the University of Liverpool and went on to serve as director of Merseyside tourism.

Mr Kenwright was later director of commercial operations at the University of Sterling where he managed holiday and conference business.

'I'm delighted to be working in such a fascinating and beautiful place,' he said.

'So much has been achieved by the Morwellham and Tamar Valley Trust and I am committed to maintaining our reputation as a leading museum and visitor attraction in the West Country.

'This is a tremendous asset for the area — a valuable educational resource and a great venue for a day out.'

Mr Kenwright said he wanted to work with the Friends of Morwellham to encourage more local people to offer their time and skills.

'We need a pool of volunteers to work alongside our highly committed staff and trustees. The conservation of the port and village is essential and we want to ensure our many visitors continue to enjoy a full day out here with plenty to interest the whole family,' he said.

A new programme of activities is planned throughout the summer and a residents' season ticket is to be introduced. It is open 10am to 5.30pm daily from April 17.
