A DECISION on the proposed leisure development at Wilminstone Quarry, on the edge of Tavistock, has been deferred by West Devon Borough Council's planning committee.
The developers want to put up a sports complex with a gym, swimming pool, all-weather pitch and dry ski slope. There would also be a manager's house and a number of holiday homes, as well as a nature reserve. The site is north-east of the town, with access from Old Exeter Road.
Tavistock Town Council has given qualified support for the scheme, but planning officers of West Devon have recommended refusal on the grounds that it would be against the Local Plan policy.
The Highways Authority also raised objections. Other concerns were expressed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, English Nature, Devon Bird Watching and Preservation Society, Devon Wildlife Trust, the Hawk and Owl Trust and a number of individuals. They say the place is important for wildlife, especially peregrine falcons, kestrels, buzzards and badgers.
