YEAR 10 students at Tavistock College chose Cancer Research as the focus for their charity fundraising this year and organised a number of events to raise money for the Imperial Cancer Research Fund.
In April all the students at the college joined in UK Trainer Day, by paying 50p each to wear trainers to school. This raised more than £600 for the charity.
Following this success, the next event was far more challenging — a sponsored abseil into Foggintor Quarry. Thirty-five students and staff took up this challenge. The event was made possible by the generosity of Maristow Estates, who provided the venue, and Tavistock and District Outdoor Education Forum, who provided all the safety equipment.
The abseil took place in front of a small crowd of families and well-wishers and despite a few 'nerves' at the top of the cliff all the 'intrepid abseilers' completed the descent.
As a result of this event alone more than £1,200 was collected in sponsor money.
With the 'grand total' edging its way towards £2,000, money was raised by making and selling multicoloured ribbon badges, providing light refreshments at a parents' evening, and finally when Year 10 students took part in 'Shirt-tail Day' by paying to wear their shirts untucked.
The students and staff were delighted to present a cheque for £2172.48 to the Imperial Cancer Research Fund at their final assembly of the year.
