A £1.5-million package of water mains improvement affecting customers in the area gets underway in the New Year. South West Water announced plans last week to renovate 35.2kms (22 miles) of water mains in Bestone and Winkleigh and the surrounding area. The company says the work will put the sparkle back into the water supply by eliminating discolouration and low pressure still experienced by a number of customers. Works on 2.7km of mains in the Winkleigh area are due to start on January 10 and should be finished by the end of February, at a cost of £180,000. A 2km stretch of water mains around Belstone will be upgraded at a cost of £100,000, with the work due to start on January 31 and take around a month.
