TWO terriers who are said to be ‘absolutely besotted with each other’ have tied the knot at a doggy wedding ceremony.

Love was in the air at The Fountain Inn in North Tawton last weekend as groom Benji and bride Betsy were wed.

Benji and Betsy, both three-year-old rescue dogs, make the ideal couple according to owners Maggie Branch and Sally Lawrence of The Fountain Inn.

‘This was just a bit of fun to celebrate their love for each other,’ said landlady Sally.

‘When I first got Betsy, she wasn’t good with other dogs. I think it might have been because of the way she was treated before she was rescued.

‘I had to teach her to socialise and our mission was to encourage her and Benji to get along. To start with, poor Benji was terrified of her!’

Sally joked that Betsy was just playing hard to get.

‘She eventually warmed to him and now we can’t keep them apart!’

‘Everyone in the pub was saying how cute a couple they were and we joked that they should get married — the idea sort of snowballed from there really.’

Dogs are often celebrated to be one of the most loyal species known to man, and loyalty comes no greater then in the form of Benji — who was patient with Betsy and helped her feel relax in the company of another canine.

Around 40 people attended the wedding on Sunday.

Ex-landord Kevin Hale, agreed to officiate the romantic ceremony at The Fountain Inn and even had his face painted like a dog for the occasion.

Betsy’s bridesmaids were Lilly, 14, and Poppy, 10 — a Jack Russell duo owned by Jane Fields.

After Betsy and Benji got hitched, a cake, provided by Kirsty Tizard, and doggy treats were enjoyed at a special tea party reception.
