CHILDREN at a local primary school have been wheelie busy on a new recycling scheme.

St Andrew's Primary School at Buckland Monachorum has bags of rubbish to recycle every week and has always collected it in clear plastic rubbish bags.

However a recent change in the West Devon Borough Council's refuse collection policy has meant that all rubbish now goes in black bin-liners leaving collectors unable to distinguish between recyclable and non-recyclable refuse.

Helen Pearce, Year 4 teacher at Buckland, said: 'The children were upset because all the recyclable rubbish was ending up in landfill sites.

'They decided to write to the local council to complain and got a very helpful response.'

The children requested green wheelie bins for the recyclable refuse and these have been promised to them.

In fact, West Devon recycling officer Jane Savage was so impressed she paid a personal visit to the school where she spoke to children and answered questions posed in their letters.
