THE lives of miners and children during Victorian mining times were re-enacted by pupils of Gulworthy Primary School.

Classes two and three have been investigating their local mining heritage as part of the Sense of Place project.

They visited Clitters Mine near Gunnislake in the Tamar Valley and used various sources to gain an insight into the life and times of the miners, their wives and children in the 1800s.

The project was completed with the re-enactment day, where the children made their own costumes and used songs, music and acting to create a day at work.

They walked to the 'mine', worked on the dressing floor and carried out a rescue which involved solving a number of different physical and mental challenges. There was also a blindfold mine experience.

Gillian Urro, class teacher and project co-ordinator, said the children had had a really valuable experience into the harshness of life for children of their age during the Victorian period.

The project had enabled them to bring to life the historical period in an educational, fun and memorable way.
