FOOTPATHS, bridleways and byways will be the subjects of a public meeting in Tavistock this month, in a bid to keep the maps of public rights of way up to date.

Devon County Council is carrying out a review of public rights of way in the parish of Tavistock and is inviting all members of the public to attend to hear a short presentation about the Definitive Map Review, how changes can be made, followed by an opportunity for questions.

Caroline Gatrell, DCC public rights of way officer, who will be giving the presentation, said: 'Devon County Council has a legal duty under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 to carry out a review of the public rights of way.

'It's done on a parish by parish basis — we were in Gulworthy and it's now going to be in Tavistock.

'I will give a short presentation and then there will be an opportunity for questions and answers — it usually lasts about an hour.'

Miss Gatrell said that the open meeting is to make sure that the Definitive Map Review is correct and to find out if there are any paths no longer in use or identify any paths that are not on the map.

'I can already think of three routes in the parish that developments have built over and there is a schedule 14 application to claim a footpath.

'The meeting may throw up others.'

The open meeting takes place on Wednesday September 21 at 7pm, at the Alexander Centre on Plymouth Road, Tavistock.
