TWO students and a teacher from Callington Community College visited the battlefields in Belgium as part of a government initiative to commemorate the centenary of World War One.

Chloe Taylor, Fiona Vie and history teacher Carolyn Woodman travelled to Belgium on the government sponsored tour of the Ypres Salient and the Somme battlefields.

The trip included visiting significant battle sites where the students got to walk across No Man's Land and stand in the trenches once occupied by troops. They also went to several places of commemoration such as Tyne Cott and Langemark cemeteries and the Thiepval Memorial Park, and had the opportunity to lay a wreath on behalf of Callington Community College as an act of remembrance at the Menin Gate Last Post ceremony.

At Thiepval they laid a wreath underneath the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry troop names on the wall.

Fiona said: 'It's made me feel proud of those soldiers who sacrificed their lives for us.'

Now, the students will play a key part in leading the college's World War One centenary commemorations.
