THE news last week that a further 10,000 paedophiles have been identified must cause any of us involved with children a considerable amount of concern.
However, we do need to keep a sense of perspective; in reality Tavistock?s streets are not roamed by bands of paedophiles and terrorists seeking easy prey.
A couple of weeks back I took my two grandchildren, aged 7 and 9, for a swim at the Meadowlands pool. It was a pleasantly innocent family occasion, and I tried to photograph it.
However, I was courteously but firmly told that this was forbidden. On protest I was informed that this was official policy designed to protect the children who otherwise could well be at risk. I complied because up to that moment I had not appreciated the paedophilic potential of my family photograph album!
Of course, children must be protected, but don?t let?s jeopardise our core liberties and family values in the process.
Your recent report on the holiday club for youngsters here in Princetown, funded by a lottery grant, but unable to open because a qualified playgroup leader cannot be found, seems to suggest a much more sensible outlet for our efforts.
