A MOMENTOUS result was achieved by Tavistock A men?s hockey team on Saturday when they won the league with four games still to go. OPM?s were desperate to win, as lying third in the league, they needed to be in second position to gain promotion themselves. The game was a tough battle with tensions boiling over on more than one occasion. OPM?s scored early in the first half only to see the effort disallowed due to a dangerous ball across the D. Tavistock applied intense pressure and the mobile visiting keeper kept the scoresheet clean for a long period. After numerous short corners Nick Andrews slotted the 99th goal of the season to give Tavistock a finger on the title. Martin Osborne pulled a couple of match winning saves out of the bag to maintain the lead and the colossal play of Costello and Edwards marshalled the defence. With the game flowing end to end Tavistock scored their second and 100th goal of the season via Nick Andrews again and gained the required breathing space. The last five minutes were frantic with Tavistock continuing to pepper the OPM goal but the visitors were always dangerous on the break and just to make the end exciting, scored a late goal with minutes to go. Tavistock fully deserved this league title as they have dominated the season throughout and look forward to playing in South West 1 next season and bridging the gap between the first XI in South 2 and the thirds in District 1.
