AN appeal for help was this week issued by students at Tavistock College, who are embarking on a special project to honour the town?s war dead. The year 9 students are hoping Times readers will help them in their research, as they compile a list of former Tavistock Grammar School and College students who have died for their country. Student Holly Turnock said: ?We would like to create a memorial plaque for past students who have lost their lives in conflicts after 1945. ?The plaque would go in our school hall, as we already have other plaques from World War II. ?We would like as much information as possible, their names, where they used to live, their ages, where and when they died.? History teacher Helen Harris said the research project was being carried out by a group of 20 of the year?s top history students. Mrs Harris said: ?We are very conscious that we don?t want to miss anyone out, that would be appalling. ?The students are researching using a variety of sources and have contacted the old boys? association. It?s going to be quite a big project, but we would like all the names by the summer if possible.? Mrs Harris said the students were hoping the plaque could be completed in time for the Remembrance Day Service in November this year. Anyone who can help the year 9 history students with names of former Tavistock School students who have died in conflicts since 1945 should contact Helen Harris at the college on [email protected]">[email protected] or send the details by post to Mrs Harris at Tavistock College, Crowndale Road, Tavistock, Devon PL19 8DD. All information will be very gratefully received.
