THE exciting sports development at Crowndale will be the chosen charity of the new mayor of Tavistock for the coming year.

Cllr Mandy Govier was sworn in at the town council's annual meeting last Tuesday.

Proposing Cllr Govier, Cllr Ted Sherrell said he had rarely known a councillor as positive and dynamic as the town's new first citizen.

He said: 'Where many of us see problems, she sees solutions. and while she always plays a major role in the council chamber, her work outside is even greater.

'A caring lady of immense compassion, she is to the people of this town more than just an elected representative, she is a true friend.'

Cllr Govier said the coming year would be busy, with political changes ahead — the county and European elctions and the local government review, with an announcement expected on July 15.

West Devon Borough Council's core strategy document, which would shape the area until 2026, was 'probably the most contentious issue of all', said Cllr Govier.

'We as a council have employed a planning consultant to advise us on a way through this document and procedure, so we can be sure we are representing the views of the residents.'

Cllr Govier said the council would also endeavour to forge closer relationships with the chamber of commerce, the police and new county councillor, once elected.

She also paid tribute to outgoing mayor Cllr Robin Pike and said he would be 'a hard act to follow'.

In nominating Tavistock Community Football Club as her charity for the year, Cllr Govier said despite a large grant from the Football Foundation, more funds were needed to see the project through to fruition.

'We should be seen to be backing the young Tavistock footballers and put our stamp on the project,' she said.

Cllr David Whitcomb was sworn in as the new deputy mayor. Cllr Govier said he was a man who was passionate about Tavistock.

'He is a dignified gentleman whose support and wisdom I am sure I will come to rely on during the forthcoming year,' she said.

Cllr Robin Pike said he had enjoyed a great year as mayor, meeting many people and representing the town at numerous events, including twinning visits to Celle and Pontivy.

He praised the support of the town council staff and particularly that of his wife, Diana.

'She has been my rock and I couldn't have done it without her — thank you, sweetheart,' he said.

He also had fulsome praise for the new mayor.

'She is a lady with strong administrative skills and a quick grasp of the situation. She does her homework and amazes me with her ability to take detailed notes and debate at the same time,' said Cllr Pike.
