A TAVISTOCK resident has been awarded the CBE in the Queen's jubilee Birthday Honours list.
Professor Roger John Bull, who is vice-chancellor and chief executive of the University of Plymouth, was awarded the honour for services to highter education.
Prof Bull, 62, joined the university when it was a polytechnic in 1985 as academic deputy director. He led the institution from 1989 and became the founding vice-chancellor of the University of Plymouth in 1992.
Chairman of the Board of Governors at the university Brian Pearse said Prof Bull had 'made a major contribution to education and the community in the South West'.
In addition to his work at the university — which has 27,000 students with an annual turnover of around £110 million — Prof Bull has served as treasurer of Universities UK for over eight years and is a non-executive director of Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, chairman of the Learning and Skills Council for Devon and Cornwall and a governor of Dartington College of Arts.
Prof Bull, who is married with two children, is due to retire this year.
