TWO officers from Dartmoor Prison have been nominated for top awards in the prestigious annual Prison Officer of the Year awards.

Philip Thomas and Steven Allum were nominated from more than 24,000 members of staff in the prison service for the awards, for which there are eight different categories.

Mr Thomas has been nominated in the healthcare category for his outstanding work in dealing with difficult, vulnerable, mentally ill prisoners.

The two other officers nominated in this category are from HMP Lewes and HMYOI Thorn Cross.

Mr Allum has been nominated in the resettlement category for his instrumental role in developing the resettlement assessment centre at HMPDartmoor ? which recently won the outstanding public service team of the year award at a glittering ceremony in London.

The other contenders for the award come from HMP and YOI Reading and HMP Ashwell.

The winners of the awards are due to be announced at a ceremony at Chateau Impney Hotel in Worcestershire on Monday June 28. Winners of the eight categories will be in contention for the overall prison officer of the year title.
