WITH all the matches in the Okehampton and district table tennis league completed, the last competition, The Pretoria Handicap matches were played in two groups of five. In the Green group, North Wyke of division one played Okehampton West End of division two. North Wyke found the going tough losing all seven games; only two went to a third leg decider. Raquel Garcia lost to Martin Rose 22-20, 19-21, 12-21. Raquel and Jill Dilley lost to Martin and Trevor Drew. In the second match Okehampton B were at home to Bridestowe. Again the result was a 7-0 win for the division two side, the handicap proving to hard for Bridestowe. In the clash between division two sides Okehampton West End and Okehampton B, Oke B came out the winners by 7-0. Maureen Venton, John Howick and Ann Creamer did well to beat the team of Richard and Martin Rose and Trevor Drew. One match went to a third leg decider, Martin Rose against John Howick in a hard fought and exciting game, John winning 22-20, 17-21, 10-21. In the Yellow group Okehampton A from division one were against The J Team of division two. Okehampton A won the two doubles and the first three singles to go 5-0 up, then Naomi Jackson beat Barry Vaughan and Nick Jackson won the last singles against Tony Howick to make the final score 5-2 to the A side. Moretonhampstead from division two were at home to division one side Tavistock B; in a hard fought match Moreton won the first doubles, Martin Fowler put the match level when he beat Peter Denman 19-21, 15-21. David Shilston put Moreton ahead beating Colin Brooker and then joined Richard Underhill to beat Martin Fowler and David Edwards winning 21-7, 22-24, 21-9. The last three singles all went to third legs, Richard losing to David 21- 14, 21-23, 17-21. Moreton won the last two singles for a 5-2, win. Two division one sides played in the next, Okehampton A against Dartmoor Fringe. Okehampton A took the two doubles and first two singles to go 4-0 ahead. Keith Smith did well in the first taking Barry Vaughan all the way just losing out in three legs 23-21, 21-17, 21-10. Tony Howick beat Peter Richardson in the next. Okehampton went on to win 6-1. Andy Moppett won the only singles for Dartmoor Fringe beating Frank Cockburn in straight sets. The J Team played Moretonhampstead, Moreton started well in the doubles, Ken and Richard Underhill beating Naomi and Nick Jackson in straight sets. Moreton won the next two singles Peter Denman beat Naomi in a hard fought third leg decider 21-17,19-21, 18-21 and Ken beat Sarah in an another hard fought game 21-19, 21- 23, 9-21. The second doubles went to Moreton, Peter and Richard beating Nick and Sarah in straight sets. In the next singles Nick found the handicap too much against Richard who won 21-14, 19-21, 9-21. Moreton won the next to go 6-0 ahead but the last was the best for the J Team, Naomi in a hard fought singles against Ken won 10-21, 21-19, 22- 20 for a win for Moretonhampstead 6-1.
