A QUALIFYING competition earlier in the summer led to three junior golfers from St Mellion playing in the prestigious European Seniors Tour Pro Am competition held at St Mellion on September 14. The four day golf spectacular opened with the Pro Am competition, followed by the three day professional tournament. The team comprised a pair of brothers from Tavistock College, Jimmy Hubbard, 16, who has a handicap of 5 and has twice won the most improved Junior and other competitions; Charlie Hubbard,13, who has a handicap of 17 and was one of a team from Tavistock College who reached the regional final of the British Heart Foundation championship and Doug Pote, 17, who has a handicap of 1. Doug is a member at St Mellion, but is now training hard in Andalucia. Having qualified for the Pro Am he flew back to St Mellion to play in this top event and compete with some of the world?s top senior professionals, including Carl Mason. The St Mellion youngsters played with senior professional Nick Job and beat most of the field to finish in fifth position. The boys were thrilled to be able to play alongside some of the great names of golf and are very grateful for the sponsorship and kindness given them by all the team from SAS Trewartha Plumbing and Heating Ltd of Liskeard.
