A PREGNANT woman had to be freed from underneath a caravan following an accident on the Okehampton bypass in the early hours of Saturday morning The accident, involving a car, a caravan and an articulated lorry, occurred shortly before 6am when the vehicles were travelling in a westbound direction. The pregnant woman was freed from under the caravan by firefighters and taken to hospital by ambulance. Two children were also taken to hospital with minor injuries. Three fire appliances attended the scene, two from Okehampton and one from Hatherleigh. l A car fire which broke out on the Okehampton bypass on Friday night was tackled by two crews from Okehampton. The incident occurred at around 10.15pm. One hosereel was used to put out the flames and the car was slightly damaged by fire. l Two people had to be cut free from a vehicle following a motorway traffic accident which occurred near Whiddon Down last Wednesday (July 19). The accident happened at around 2pm on the westbound carriageway between Woodleigh Junction and Whiddon Down. Two cars were involved in the incident and firefighters had to cut free two passengers, who were then taken to hospital with suspected back injuries. Crews from Okehampton and Hatherleigh took part in the freeing operation. l Firefighters last week also had to tackle a malicious call-out after a woodland area was deliberately set on fire on Ball Hill near Okehampton?s Simmons Park. The blaze was extinguished by a crew of firefighters from Okehampton, but was made more difficult by the extremely hot temperatures. Station officer Ian Donovan warned people to take extra care in the extreme weather conditions. ?We would ask people to be very careful when burning waste materials on bonfires in this dry, hot weather. ?Also, anyone who is camping, should take extreme care when using matches, because tents can easily catch alight and they will only take a minute to burn completely.?
