THE 19th annual Stowford Garden Show took place on Saturday, August 11 in the parish hall. Mrs Audrey Hennessey welcomed visitors and thanked those who helped organise the show and the many businesses who advertised in the schedule. She introduced West Devon Cllr Donald Horn, who praised the standard of exhibits, in a year that had not helped gardeners. He thanked those who worked hard to put on the show.

Mr Horn, Mrs Hennessey and Mrs Eilleen Warren presented the winners with their prizes. Cllr Horn was presented with a plant by Katie Bevan and Lily Chick.

Quilting, patchwork and knitting were well supported with some beautiful exhibits. The children showed their imagination with the vegetable monsters, cookery was well supported, and the chocolate sponges and apricot cakes looking appetising.

But the poor weather meant vegetable growers' entries were down. Floral displays were on a par to last year.

Cookery: chocolate sponge, S Nash; 7 inch lemon meringue, S Allain; apricot cake (set recipe), A Chick; four fruit scones, J Chick; four shortbread biscuits, A Hennessey; jar jam,  J Bevan; jar marmalade, J Bevan.

Sewing: hand quilted item, J Plowman; machine quilted item, S Allain; embroidered  or cross stitch item, J Plowman; patchwork article, C Stuart; Ridge quilters cup, J Lovett.
