LIVE electricity wires were left dangling across the road at Thorndon Cross following an accident. A Freelander car and a Ford Fiesta van were involved in the collision at 6.30am on Monday. The Fiesta was in collision with a telegraph pole, damaging it and bringing the wires down. The vehicle ended up balanced on a hedge with live wires hanging above it. The occupants of both vehicles managed to escape and were taken to hospital by ambulance. Two fire crews from Okehampton attended, and the cars were removed. Western Power was called to deal with the overhead wires. It took fire crews and other workers approximately an hour to clear the road. A fire crew from Okehampton was also called to Oatnell Farm at Thorndon Cross around midday to deal with a mini digger that had caught fire on open ground. The fire was extinguished within an hour, but the digger was severely damaged. Fire investigators said there were no suspicious circumstances.
