POWER cables in Tavistock were brought down by a lorry headed for the town?s annual Goose Fair last Wednesday, resulting in major tailbacks for visitors coming to the fair.

The power lines came down outside the Spar Shop in Fore Street at around midday, blocking the road for about an hour.

Otherwise Goose Fair went off without any major incidents, report Tavistock Police. Sgt Ian Woods said two vehicles were removed during the fair because they were illegally parked. One vehicle was parked in Glanville Road, preventing access to the bus car park, while another was causing an obstruction by Fitzford Cottages.

Police also reunited a number of lost children with their parents, and arrested a female pickpocket.

Trading Standards officers were also in operation at Goose Fair, and seized a large quantity of counterfeit DVDs.

Police would like to take the opportunity to say a special thanks to residents of Whitchurch Road, Plymouth Road and Parkwood Road, for removing their vehicles for the day.

l The incredible total of more than nine tonnes of rubbish was accumulated and collected during last week?s annual fair.

The rubbish was collected by a 20-strong team of West Devon Borough Council contract workers from Focsa, who moved in early on Thursday morning after the fairgoers finally went home.

The workers, along with two members of staff from the borough council?s client services department, completed their task just before 7am last Thursday.
