REFERENCE article ?Town needs more power? (April 3), Someone will say different, but to my simple mind if Okehampton needs more power why not build the new sub-station in Okehampton?
Power is lost through cable distance, so building it nearer to the source of the demand would be more efficient.
Building on good agricultural land is in line with the Government, and modern day planners? way of thinking, to reduce the amount of farmland as farming becomes more efficient.
Fine, until farmers are forced to reduce the amount of chemicals they use. Then we will need more land, whilst golf courses can easily be converted back to farmland, housing estates and power stations cannot.
It is proposed to put the last kilometre of cable underground, this leaves 29 kilometre above it!
How can this help reduce the number of power cuts in our area? Overhead cables are open to the elements, that extra large puff of wind and freezing temperatures will result in winter misery.
This is the 21st century. All power cables should be buried; cost is no excuse, no doubt Transco and South West Water could save millions by using the same reasoning.
