A GERMAN shepherd has won over the hearts of staff at Wingletang Animal Rescue Centre near Tavistock. Amber came to the centre in Heathfield as a stray in early February after she was seen wandering around the local area. When meeting her for the first time the staff at MGFT discovered she possessed a gentle and trusting nature which led her to win many hearts. But from the onset they could also see she had ear problems and would shake her head to try and relieve the discomfort the wax build-up was causing. Amber's ears were treated for a few weeks with a medicated ear solution — a tough battle for the staff as she would cunningly come up with new ways to avoid treatment. The battle for recovery continued and Amber needed sedation for a thorough investigation of her ears. It was soon discovered she had ruptured eardrums in both ears, which were probably caused by untreated infections. Three different organisms were cultured in both her ears and she was put on specific antibiotics to treat these. After six-weeks the infection was better but was not one hundred percent — as a result surgery was the only other option remaining. The long operation at Westmoor Veterinary Centre to remove her external ear canal in each ear was soon underway. Amber stayed overnight at the vets after the operation to receive strong pain relief. A spokesperson for MGFT said: 'The following day she went home and you would not have believed anything had been done as she was so bright and lively. 'Following the operation an intensive programme of after care for several weeks was necessary — she took this in her stride and it showed how uncomfortable she had been before. Over the next few days and weeks she healed well and became more and more playful with a real sense of humour.' Amber is currently at MGFT but a home is already waiting for her. MGFT rescues and re-homes dogs and cats and also offers boarding for cats. Anyone who can offer a home to one of their animals or can help the charity in another way should call 01822 810215. l MGFT is holding a companion dog show and family fun day on July 20 from 11am to 4.30pm. Entry is £1 for adults and 50p for children.
